They combine circulation, level changes, door operation, weather protection, wayfinding, security and compliance in one concentrated piece of the project. When the entry is resolved late, the cost of fixing it rises quickly. When it is designed well from the outset, it supports approval pathways, improves everyday usability and reduces the need for awkward workarounds.
What equitable entry actually means
Equitable entry is not simply about providing an alternative route for someone who cannot use stairs. It is about giving people a comparable arrival experience, regardless of mobility, sensory, cognitive or age-related differences. In practical terms, that means the principal approach, door hardware, thresholds, circulation space, controls and information should work together so that people can enter independently, safely and with dignity.
This is where projects often run into trouble. A separate accessible entrance may technically exist, yet it can involve a longer travel path, after-hours assistance, reduced visibility, or a service-zone arrival that clearly signals secondary status. In some project types that arrangement may be unavoidable due to site or heritage constraints, but it should be treated as a last option rather than a default design move.

How to design equitable entries from the start
The most reliable way to design equitable entries is to treat the entry sequence as a whole, not as isolated technical elements. The decision about where people arrive affects gradients. Crossfalls, surface finishes and transitions need careful control. A path that meets dimensional requirements but becomes slippery in rain, ponds at the landing, or forces a mobility scooter into an awkward turning movement is not performing well. Material selection should reflect actual use, maintenance realities and local climate exposure, not just visual consistency with the facade.
Lighting is another area where compliant intent can fail in practice. Poorly lit entries create safety issues, reduce sign readability and make hardware harder to identify. For people with low vision, inconsistent contrast between walls, frames, doors and handles can make orientation needlessly difficult. Good lighting and contrast are modest design investments with significant usability benefits.
Thresholds, drainage and weather protection
If there is one recurring weak point at entries, it is the threshold. Projects often try to satisfy waterproofing, drainage and accessibility separately, even though they are tightly linked. A beautifully level threshold can become a problem if water migrates inside. An overbuilt drainage solution can create wheels-catching grates or abrupt transitions that compromise access.
There is no one-size-fits-all detail. The right solution depends on exposure, finished floor levels, facade build-up, drainage points and door system selection. What matters is coordination. Architects, hydraulic designers, waterproofing consultants and access consultants should test the threshold as a single assembly.
Weather protection should also be considered part of equitable access, not just a facade accessory. Covered landings improve safety and comfort for everyone, particularly people using mobility aids, assistance animals, prams or support workers. They also help intercoms, readers and door hardware function reliably. In many projects, a modest canopy does more practical work than an expensive architectural flourish elsewhere.
Compliance is necessary, but not sufficient
Understanding how to design equitable entries requires a clear distinction between minimum compliance and good access outcomes. But they do not replace design judgement.
For example, a nominally compliant path may still be confusing, indirect or socially segregating.
