In practical terms, accessible playground design guidelines should deal with far more than entry compliance. A playground is a sequence of experiences. If a child or carer cannot arrive safely, move independently, reach social spaces, use equipment with choice and comfort, and leave with dignity, the design is not genuinely inclusive.

Gradients, levels and thresholds
Level changes deserve close attention. Even modest lips between surfaces, poorly detailed edge restraints or abrupt transitions into softfall areas can stop wheels, trip ambulant users or create confusion for children with low vision. On sloping sites, the pressure to terrace quickly can result in isolated platforms linked by stairs and little else.
Where changes in level are unavoidable, they should be designed as part of the experience, not an afterthought. Ramps, landings, retaining interfaces and edge protection need to be resolved with both compliance and play value in mind. Inclusive play means choice, not a single accessible item

For some children, the key issue is getting onto elevated equipment. Legibility matters as well. Clear sightlines, intuitive paths, consistent material cues and predictable sequencing can reduce anxiety and support independent use. Fencing, gates and boundaries should be secure where needed, especially in childcare and some school settings, but they should not create an institutional feel or unnecessary pinch points.
Carers, siblings and amenity are part of the access outcome
Playgrounds are rarely used by children alone. Parents, grandparents, teachers, support staff and siblings all shape how the space works. If accessible seating is poorly placed, if shade is missing, if the nearest accessible toilet is too far away, or if pram parking blocks circulation, the design has not resolved the full access equation.
Seating should provide options, not a single bench at the perimeter. Some users need close supervision points near equipment. Others need quieter positions with backrests, armrests and room beside them for mobility aids. Drinking fountains, picnic settings, bins and shelters should sit on accessible routes and be usable without forcing people into the path of moving play.
Toilets and change facilities also influence whether a playground is genuinely inclusive for longer stays. On public projects, these decisions often sit outside the immediate landscape scope, but they should still be part of the access strategy. Users do not experience the playground as separate from the surrounding precinct.
Compliance is essential, but standards alone are not the design brief
